The FireDrums Video Tutorial Contest was created to encourage the creation of free quality online fire and flow arts instructional content, and as an opportunity for instructors to be recognized and promoted for their talents through their participation in the contest and as an instructor at FireDrums. Anyone interested in instructing at FireDrums is welcome to participate in the contest.  

 

This document contains all the information you need to know about making and submitting your video.

By entering this contest, it is assumed that you want to teach workshops at FireDrums XIV.  It is a requirement of the contest winners to teach 3 classes.  

Submissions for this contest are accepted between January 1st, 2016 – February 7th, 2016.

Note: You are NOT required to enter the contest in order to teach a class at FireDrums.  Other instructor opportunities can be found here.

5 Winners will be selected through the judging process described below.

  • each winner will receive a ticket to FireDrums XIV and a $100 travel grant.

 

Note: Tickets will be awarded through ticketing services.  Monetary prizes are preferably awarded through PayPal.

CONTEST RULES:

  • Only one entry per participant allowed.
  • All video entries must be between 1.5 and 4 minutes MAX including the Splash Screen. You will lose points for exceeding the time limit at the rate of 1 point per second. (You are allowed a 5 second “upload buffer” to accommodate for occasional discrepancies that occur between the video length before and after uploading.)
  • All entries must be new.  No recycling old videos.  
  • The title of the video on YouTube must be “(your tutorials’ title): FireDrums XIV”
  • Be descriptive and include the prop in your title.
  • All entry videos must begin with the FireDrums splash screen, available for download here as an MP4.
  • If you are having trouble with the splash screen, here is an alternative format you can download: MOV
  • If you are still having trouble: please email workshops@firedrums.org.
  • Entrants must submit a minimum of 3 workshop proposals for FireDrums XIV in conjunction with their video submission. This will be included in the Contest Submission Form. (Workshop proposals factor into judging.  See “Judging” below.)  
  • Winners are expected to teach 3 workshops at FireDrums XIV.
  • Note: Workshop submissions may, but are not required to be the same topic or even prop as your video tutorial.

 

Team Contest Submission Rules

  • Team submissions are allowed.  
  • Total winning teams in the contest will be limited to one due to limited resources.  
  • Limit of two people per team.  
  • The content of a team tutorial submission must be partner based to be valid.      
  • The team must submit information for both team members on the submission form.
  • A team contest or class submission does not mean two people teaching a solo class together. The material taught must REQUIRE two people.
  • A team’s workshop submissions must include at least two partner classes and may include solo classes.  The bottom line is that each member must be a part of 3 classes.  
  • For example: 3 partner classes, or 2 partner classes + 1 solo class each

JUDGING LOGISTICS:

  • Judging will take place by 4 anonymous judges between February 8th – February 14th, 2016 after contest submissions have closed on February 7th.
  • Winners will be announced and notified by email on February 15th.  
  • Your personal scores may be released privately to you via email upon request, after the winners have been determined.

JUDGING CATEGORIES & RESPECTIVE WEIGHTS:

Each category will be separately scored on a 5 point scale, multiplied by its respective weight according to the table below, and added to the other categories to produce a total score out of 100 possible points.  

The judge’s total scores will then be added together to produce each video’s grand total. Prizes will be awarded to the 5 highest scoring video entries.

CREATING YOUR VIDEO: TIPS & CONSIDERATIONS:

When making quality tutorial videos, there are many factors to consider.  The following link is a section that has been developed to help you better understand what the judges will be looking for, and thus help you make the best video to your ability.  They are not requirements, but rather suggestions and considerations.  Feel free to enlist the help of eager and media savvy friends to make your video.

SUBMITTING YOUR FIREDRUMS XIV VIDEO TUTORIAL:

  1. Make sure you have read through this document thoroughly and followed all of the Contest Rules.

 

  1. Upload your completed FireDrums XIV Video Tutorial to youtube.  Any account will do.  
  1. Title your video on YouTube accordingly
  1.  “(your tutorial’s title): FireDrums XIV”
  2. Be concise and include the prop in your title.
  1. Make sure your video is posted as “Public”
  2. Did you remember to include the FireDrums splash screen?
  3. Your video isn’t any longer than 4 minutes right??

 

  1. Post a link to your video on the FireDrums Facebook Group (not the FireDrums Page!)
  1. NOTE: we are not responsible for finding your video! You MUST post it to the group in order to be considered!

  1. Fill out the following submission form.  Included in the form will be your personal information, the link to your entry video, and your workshop proposals.

  • By entering the FireDrums XIV Video Tutorial Contest, you agree that FireDrums reserves the right to use your entry video, in whole or in part, for the purpose of promoting FireDrums.
  • Prize tickets may only be used by the contest entrant, not transferred or gifted in any way.
  • If a contest winner becomes unable to attend FireDrums, their award will return to the FireDrums Workshop Team to do as they deem appropriate.  No replacements shall be made by the contest winner.
